“Did you know that the name of this temple is said to be the origin of a Japanese idiom?” Today we stand before Houkai-ji Temple. This Jodo sect temple is in Kita-ku Osaka. Houkai-ji Temple’s history is intertwined with Osaka’s cultural fabric.

Let’s delve into the story of Houkai-ji Temple. It was established in 1593 by Kakusei Hoshi. This was during a period of urban development around Osaka Castle. Six temple districts were created. Houkai-ji Temple was likely established at that time.

The temple faced significant challenges. Fires in 1814 and 1834 destroyed it. It was rebuilt in 1843. The current temple building was restored in May 1964. Houkai-ji Temple has shown resilience through turmoil.

Notably, Houkai-ji Temple is linked to a famous kabuki play. It features in a section of “Meoto Imoseyama Onna Teikin”. It mentions “Adanori Houkai-ji”. This phrase alludes to illicit relationships. The term “Houkai Rinki” meaning to be jealous of another’s love is said to originate from the temple’s name.

The main deity of Houkai-ji Temple is Amida Nyorai. In 2005, the temple’s chief priest became the 74th head priest of Kyoto Chion-in Temple.

Despite being in the city center, Houkai-ji Temple offers tranquility. Passing through its gates, one finds a peaceful atmosphere. It’s conveniently located near Osaka Metro Higashi Umeda Station. It stands as a testament to history and accessibility.

So, as you leave Houkai-ji Temple remember its history. Think about its connection to Osaka’s cultural heritage. Consider the intriguing origin of the idiom linked to its name.
