Once upon a time, the First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst wasn’t just a building. It was a shared dream of religious freedom dating back to 1652.

The First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst stands as the oldest Presbyterian church in New York City. It also ranks as the fourth oldest in the United States. Imagine the stories held within these walls.

Originally, this congregation shared a building with various denominations. These included the Church of England, the Dutch Reformed Church, Presbyterians and Quakers. This reflected an early commitment to religious diversity.

In 1669, the town of Newtown, later known as Elmhurst, built a dedicated space for these churches. By 1715, the congregation officially became part of the Presbyterian Church. They constructed their own building. Sadly, it was destroyed during the American Revolutionary War.

The resilient congregation rebuilt in 1791. They named it the Old White Church. This building served them until 1928. The First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst moved to its current location when the new building was completed in 1895.

A wealthy merchant named John Goldsmith Payntar played a vital role in the church’s history. He left money for the construction of a new church building. Payntar wanted it to be an exact copy of the Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley. He greatly admired that church.

Frank A Collins designed the new First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst. Construction began in 1893. The church was dedicated in May 1895.

Interestingly, the First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst had to be moved in 1924. Queens Boulevard was being widened. The entire 3000-ton structure was moved 125 feet using rollers.

In 1931, a new parish house was built. This happened because the church’s chapel was condemned for subway construction. The Grand Avenue Newtown station is right outside.

Throughout its history, the First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst has embraced diversity. In the 18th century, it accepted African Americans as full members. The church even supported a small African Presbyterian Church.

Today, the First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst continues to be a spiritual home for many. It is a multicultural congregation with a rich heritage.

The First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst actively engages with its community. The church runs a garden where they grow produce. Some of the vegetables are donated to local food banks.

The First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognizes its historical significance. It stands as a testament to faith community and resilience. The First Presbyterian Church of Elmhurst is a beacon of hope in Elmhurst.
