Flowing through the heart of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor is the Sungai Kerayong. This river tells a story of urban development and natural adaptation. Sungai Kerayong is a tributary of the larger Klang River. It plays a vital role in the region’s water system.

Sungai Kerayong begins its journey in Kampung Pandan. It flows westward towards the Old Klang Road. Eventually, it merges with the Klang River. Like many rivers in Kuala Lumpur, Sungai Kerayong encompasses a network of streams. These streams collectively bear the same name.

The Klang River is the main recipient of Sungai Kerayong’s waters. Klang River itself stretches 120 km. It drains a basin of about 1,288 square kilometers. The Klang River has eleven major tributaries, including the Sungai Kerayong.

The Klang River has a significant history. Its confluence with the Gombak River gave Kuala Lumpur its name. Kuala Lumpur means “muddy estuary” in Malay. This name reflects the river’s characteristics. The Klang River flows through many important areas. These include Brickfields, Bangsar and Old Klang Road.

The Sungai Kerayong and the Klang River have faced challenges. Heavy development narrowed parts of the river. This has contributed to flash floods in Kuala Lumpur. The SMART Tunnel helps to mitigate these floods. It diverts water from nearby lakes to manage water flow. It can direct water from the Kampung Berembang Lake near the Klang River to Taman Desa Lake near the Sungai Kerayong. Water can also flow from the Sungai Kerayong to the Klang River.

Efforts have been made to clean up the Klang River. These efforts include river cleaning and environmental protection. They also focus on flood mitigation and land development. The goal is to rehabilitate the river’s condition.

Since 2019, The Ocean Cleanup has installed Interceptor units. These solar-powered machines clean the river. They have collected a substantial amount of garbage. This shows a commitment to restoring the river.

The Sungai Kerayong is more than just a waterway. It is part of Kuala Lumpur’s history. Sungai Kerayong has a future that involves both environmental care and urban progress.
