Seven eighty-four. A date etched in time. It marks the first mention of Niederdorfelden in the Lorch Codex. Right here before you stands a place steeped in history. A place that whispers tales of medieval lords and bustling markets.

Niederdorfelden. A small municipality nestled within the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse. Its name itself is a story. It means lower Dorfelden differentiating it from its neighbor Oberdorfelden. Its story stretches back centuries. Long before the first documented record. Archaeological evidence suggests settlements predating the Roman era. Imagine the lives lived here. Generations of families tending their lands.

The heart of Niederdorfelden beat within its Burg Dorfelden. A magnificent water castle. Its foundations were laid in the 13th century. Picture the imposing structure. It stood proudly on a long island between the Nidder River and a millrace. Much of the moat still remains. A testament to its past.

The lords of Dorfelden once held sway. A powerful family. Their influence extended beyond Niederdorfelden. They owned property along the Kinzig River near Hanau. Their ambition drove them. They traded their family name for that of Hanau. A strategic move that shifted their power base.

In 1234 a crucial division of inheritance took place. Reinhard I of Hanau and Heinrich II of Dorfelden divided their father’s possessions. Heinrich II received Burg Dorfelden. Later the ownership changed hands many times. The lords of Hagen-Münzenberg and then Falkenstein acquired parts of Niederdorfelden.

The year 1266 holds another significant event. The first mention of the mill associated with the castle appears. The imperial chamberlain Philipp von Falkenstein gave half of the castle and mill to the Fulda monastery. This mill a testament to the village’s early economic activity. It operated until 1960.

Around 1300 another Dorfelden family emerges. They were not related to the former lords. They served the lords and later counts of Hanau. In 1333 Burg Dorfelden was given to Elector Rudolf I of Saxony-Wittenberg as a fief. He immediately granted it to Ulrich II of Hanau. A strategic maneuver to secure a foothold near Frankfurt. The location of imperial elections.

In 1368 Ulrich III of Hanau granted Dorfelden town rights. The town was granted the freedoms of Hanau. This seemingly did not affect the development of the place. Niederdorfelden then belonged to the Windecken office. It later became part of the Hanau county and then Hanau-Münzenberg.

The Reformation swept through Niederdorfelden in the mid-16th century. Initially Lutheran. A later change occurred. Count Philipp Ludwig II enforced Calvinism. He used his right to determine the religion of his subjects. Niederdorfelden became firmly Reformed.

The death of Count Johann Reinhard III in 1736 marked a turning point. Niederdorfelden became part of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel. Later it became the Electorate of Hesse. Its fate was intertwined with the larger historical forces. Napoleon’s influence. The upheavals of war and shifting borders.

Despite the tumultuous times. Niederdorfelden endured. It developed. It adapted. Today it stands as a vibrant community. Its past etched in its very stones. Its future unwritten yet full of promise. This is Niederdorfelden. A place where history and present-day life intertwine. A place worth exploring.
