Consider the year 1513. Castelo de Paiva gains official recognition as a municipality.

Today we stand in Castelo de Paiva. It is a town with a rich history in the Aveiro district of Portugal. Castelo de Paiva covers 115.01 square kilometers. In 2021, the population was 15,586. That is a density of 135 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Castelo de Paiva is bordered by several municipalities. Penafiel and Marco de Canaveses lie to the north. Cinfães is to the east. Arouca sits to the east and south. Gondomar is to the west.

The municipality is divided into six civil parishes. These include Fornos, Real and Santa Maria de Sardoura. Sāo Martinho de Sardoura and Sobrado e Bairros are also included.

Castelo de Paiva is twinned with other cities.

Wine lovers, listen up. Castelo de Paiva is known for its vinho verde. Some consider it one of the best in the world. The vinho verde from the Bairros parish is especially prized. It is known as the best red vinho verde in the world. At the 8th edition of the Vinhos de Portugal competition, a vinho verde from here won a silver medal.

Each year, Castelo de Paiva hosts the Feira do Vinho Verde. This is a fair dedicated to vinho verde. It takes place on the first weekend of July. The fair also celebrates local farmers, gastronomy and crafts. It is held in the Largo do Conde. This event brings together wine producers and artisans. Restaurants from the municipality also participate. Other fairs dedicated to vinho verde are organized in different parishes. Castelo de Paiva’s white vinho verde won a silver medal at an international fair in Germany in 2017.

Let us remember an important date. On March 4, 2001, tragedy struck. The Hintze Ribeiro Bridge collapsed. This bridge connected Castelo de Paiva to Penafiel. Fifty-nine people died in the disaster. A monument called “Anjo de Portugal” honors the victims near the bridge.

Local legend says Saint Anthony of Padua has ties to Castelo de Paiva. Documents suggest his parents were born here.

Castelo de Paiva is also known for the Paiva Walkways. These walkways offer stunning views. They are a must-see for nature lovers.

Castelo de Paiva offers a blend of history, natural beauty and wine. Its cultural and tragic past creates a unique destination.
