“Chips, Manchester is not just a name. It is a bold statement in architecture. Right here in New Islington, Chips stands as a testament to urban renewal. Historically a part of Ancoats, Chips is a residential apartment building next to the Ashton Canal.
Tom Bloxham of Urban Splash wanted something beyond the mundane. He collaborated with architect Will Alsop to bring Chips to life. Alsop, founder of Alsop Architects, designed this nine-story building. Civic Engineers handled the structural engineering.
Completed in 2009, Chips quickly became a recognizable landmark. Its postmodern style breaks away from traditional designs. The building features apartments with unique layouts and views. Each floor offers a different perspective of Manchester.
Chips became part of the New Islington Millennium Village project. This project aimed to revitalize east Manchester. Urban Splash led the charge, transforming the area into a vibrant community. Chips played a key role in attracting residents and businesses.
However, Chips faced challenges. In January 2018, a fire risk assessment raised concerns. The cladding on the building was found to have non-fire retardant materials. This discovery led to discussions about building safety.
Despite these issues, Chips remains an important architectural icon. Its design sparked conversations about modern living spaces. It stands as a reminder of the ambitions and complexities of urban regeneration.
Take a moment to appreciate the unique shape and structure of Chips. Its presence has undeniably shaped the skyline of New Islington. It represents a vision for the future of residential living in Manchester. Its story continues to evolve as part of the ever-changing urban landscape.
