Nine years. That’s how long the parishioners of Iglesia Santa María de Nazaret waited for their dream to take shape. Here, at Cañada del Santísimo 27, stands a testament to their faith and perseverance. Iglesia Santa María de Nazaret isn’t just a building. It’s the heart of the eastern part of Ensanche de Vallecas, a beacon of community in this vibrant Madrid neighborhood. Originally, the parish began its journey in 2009, carved from the territory of San Pedro Advíncula de Vallecas. In 2012, Father Fulgencio Espa took the helm, leading the congregation first within the walls of Torrevilano school and later, in 2014, to a temporary prefabricated structure. Imagine holding services, baptisms, and community gatherings in a simple, temporary space, fueled by the hope of a permanent home. The new Iglesia Santa María de Nazaret building, dedicated in September 2021, is a modern marvel that mirrors the contemporary architecture of its surroundings. Its sleek, minimalist lines, crafted from a blend of wood, marble, and glass, evoke a sense of peace and serenity. This modern design resonates with the working-class spirit of Vallecas, where each building boasts its own unique design. Iglesia Santa María de Nazaret stands in harmony with this eclectic landscape, a symbol of both tradition and progress. The larger space has allowed the church to expand its activities. Baptisms, weddings, and community gatherings now fill the calendar, a testament to the church’s vital role in the community. With the start of catechism classes in October, hundreds of children will soon fill the space with laughter and youthful energy. The dedication ceremony itself was a grand event, presided over by Cardinal Carlos Osoro, Archbishop of Madrid. The joy of the parishioners, after nine years of waiting, was palpable. Even the pandemic couldn’t dampen their spirits, with the ceremony broadcast on YouTube for those unable to attend in person. Iglesia Santa María de Nazaret is more than just a church. It is a place of welcome, a center of community, and a symbol of hope in the heart of Ensanche de Vallecas.
