Beneath the vast Texas sky, Immanuel Lutheran Church stands as a testament to the enduring faith of German immigrants. Immanuel Lutheran Church began its journey in La Vernia in 1901. Twenty families, yearning for a spiritual home, gathered and called Reverend H.W. Schmidt to lead them. These families, many of whom had relocated from the New Berlin community and Christ Lutheran Church, initially held services in the local Presbyterian church. Imagine their excitement as they watched their own church rise on the banks of Cibolo Creek. The building was completed in October 1901, a beacon of hope and a symbol of their commitment to their faith. A cemetery, established on donated land the following year, became the final resting place for generations to come. Immanuel Lutheran Church faced challenges. Pastor Schmidt’s departure in 1903 led to a shared pastorate with Christ Lutheran Church. This arrangement continued for years. The church thrived under the leadership of Reverend Nic Frueh, who served from 1911 to 1943. In 1932, a violent storm and the ravages of time necessitated a new church building. This new structure replaced the original 1901 building. Under Pastor Frueh’s guidance, Immanuel Lutheran Church embraced change. English services were introduced. One member even answered the call to ministry. Immanuel Lutheran Church also faced the destructive power of nature. Floods in 1913, 1973, and 1998 tested the resilience of the congregation. Each time, the members rallied, rebuilding and reaffirming their commitment to their faith and community. Immanuel Lutheran Church continues to serve La Vernia. It stands as a testament to the faith and perseverance of those who built it. It is a vital part of the rich ethnic and religious heritage of Wilson County.
