“A humble beginning” they whispered. The Chiesa di S. Romano Levita e Martire alla Torrazza stands before you. It’s not a grand cathedral. It’s a testament to faith in a simpler time. Construction began in 1940 a time of great uncertainty. The church was initially small only the transept was built. It was blessed in 1940 a significant moment for the small community. In 1941 it officially became a parish. The Rosminian Fathers took charge. Their dedication shaped the church’s early years. Don Giuseppe Baroni became the first parish priest.

The church was built in a part of Milan called Torrazza then a small district. It was three kilometers from the Trenno parish church. Initially there wasn’t even a small oratory for the more than five hundred faithful. The need for a church was clear. Cardinal Schuster approved its construction. It was part of a larger project to build fourteen churches on Milan’s outskirts.

But the early years were humble. The church was modest. Masses were sometimes celebrated by Capuchin friars from the Musocco cemetery. A small community gathered in its simple walls. Their faith and hope were strong. It was a place of spiritual refuge.

Later changes came. The population increased dramatically. This was because of a new housing development. In the 1960s and 70s the area transformed. A temporary prefabricated church was built. This better served the growing community. A new parish of S. Leonardo da Porto Maurizio was even created. The original church remained a hub. It served as a community center.

Then there was the creation of the new parish center. This grand project was completed in 1999. The ambitious plan involved Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini. It was part of the “Piano Montini” a significant church initiative. However budget cuts meant some features were never added. A bell tower and a hall were missing. So too were several classrooms and a convent. Even the courtyard and surrounding area remain incomplete.

The Chiesa di S. Romano Levita e Martire alla Torrazza is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living history. It represents a faith that persevered through challenges. Its humble beginnings led to a significant community gathering place. It continues to serve its faithful today. It tells the story of a community that grew and adapted. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the ongoing development of Milan itself.
