Hidden amidst the modern skyscrapers of Beijing’s financial district lies a piece of ancient history. The Jintai Xizhao stele. This unassuming monument is one of Beijing’s Eight Views. But its story is far from ordinary.

For centuries the Jintai Xizhao stele remained a mystery. Lost to time it was mentioned in ancient texts. These texts described a golden platform a symbol of imperial favor. Legends spoke of a platform built by the Yan King. It was used to reward meritorious officials. This platform supposedly stood near the city’s ancient gates.

The precise location remained elusive. Various locations were suggested. These included areas near the Chongwenmen Gate and the Changfumen Gate. Many believed the stele marked a site of great historical importance. But its exact location remained lost for years.

Then in 2001 during the construction of Beijing’s CBD a discovery was made. Workers unearthed a massive stone. It lay two meters below the ground. The stone was reported to the cultural authorities. They immediately began excavations.

The stone was painstakingly cleaned. It revealed four large characters. They read 金台夕照 Jintai Xizhao. This confirmed its identity as the long lost stele. The stele itself is beautifully crafted. It stands 3.3 meters tall. It has intricate carvings. The inscription is a poem. This poem celebrates the beauty of the sunset. It also references the historical significance of the site.

Today the Jintai Xizhao stele stands proudly in the heart of Beijing’s modern landscape. A quiet testament to the enduring legacy of the past. It stands within the courtyard of the Financial Center’s headquarters building. A pool of clear water surrounds the stele. A large platform sits alongside. The stele is a reminder that even amidst the relentless pace of progress history endures. It stands as a symbol of Beijing’s rich and vibrant past. A reminder that the past is always present. It is waiting to be discovered in the most unexpected of places. The Jintai Xizhao stele a quiet giant a treasure unearthed. A treasure reclaimed by time and rediscovered in the heart of modern Beijing.
