Chamisso, a man of many worlds, stares out from his bust in Monbijoupark. He seems to watch the world with a knowing gaze. Here, at the Chamisso Bust, we encounter a figure whose life was a fascinating tapestry of travel, science, and literature. This bust, created in 1888 by Julius Moser, immortalizes Adelbert von Chamisso, a man who considered himself a stranger everywhere. Born in France, he fled with his family to Berlin during the French Revolution. He served in the Prussian military, yet he never truly felt German. He became a botanist, the director of the herbarium at the Botanical Garden, and a member of the Academy of Sciences. Yet, he is perhaps best known for his literary creation, “Peter Schlemihl’s Miraculous Story,” a dark fairytale about a man who sells his shadow. Chamisso lived in Berlin, at Friedrichstraße 235, from 1822 until his death in 1838. He was baptized Louis Charles Adélaïde de Chamisso, a name reflecting his French origins. He journeyed around the world, exploring distant lands and collecting botanical specimens. His herbarium, a testament to his scientific pursuits, resided here in Berlin’s Botanical Museum. Imagine Chamisso strolling through this very park, perhaps pondering the nature of belonging or the mysteries of the human heart. The Chamisso Bust serves not just as a memorial to a remarkable individual, but also as a reminder of the complex interplay of identity, displacement, and creativity.
