Why is Yakacık Mahallesi split between two districts? Look around you. We’re standing at the border of these districts: Yenimahalle and Keçiören. Yes, you heard right. This neighborhood, Yakacık Mahallesi, has the unusual distinction of being shared between these two districts. It’s a bit of a geographical quirk, but it speaks to the way Ankara has grown and developed over time. Before 1961 Yakacık Mahallesi was part of the Balâ district. This area was under the administration of Altındağ back then. However, on February 13, 1961, things changed. Yakacık Mahallesi became part of Yenimahalle district. The part you see across the way, remained under Keçiören’s jurisdiction. This division means that residents on opposite sides of the street might find themselves voting in different districts or interacting with different local government offices.
