Dedicated to the fallen heroes of the 13th Husarenregiment, this monument stands as a stoic reminder of sacrifice. The 13er Husaren-Denkmal is not just a stone structure. It is a repository of memory. Inaugurated on June 14, 1925, the 13er Husaren-Denkmal was a tribute to those lost in World War I. They belonged to the König Humbert von Italien, the 1st Kurhessisches Number 13 regiment.

Originally, the 13er Husaren-Denkmal stood in Bockenheim. Locals affectionately knew the place as Königsplätzchen. Today, it is the Tilly-Edinger-Platz. In 2003, the monument was moved. This was to make way for the Adorno-Denkmal, commemorating Theodor W. Adorno’s 100th birthday. Now, it resides in the Senckenberganlage. It sits peacefully in this park-like setting.

Carl Hochscheidt created the 13er Husaren-Denkmal. It is crafted entirely from Muschelkalk. This limestone gives it a distinctive appearance. The 13er Husaren-Denkmal rests upon an octagonal, three-tiered platform. Above this, a base shaped like the Iron Cross rises. From the center, a square shaft ascends. It broadens as it climbs. The top tapers in stages. Crowns and three stars are carved on the sides.

Inscriptions mark the 13er Husaren-Denkmal. The front reads: Gewidmet den im 1. Weltkrieg Gefallenen des 13. Husarenregiments. This translates to Dedicated to the fallen of the 1st World War of the 13th Hussar Regiment. The back bears a Latin phrase Invictis victi victuri. It means To the undefeated, the defeated who will conquer again.

The sides of the 13er Husaren-Denkmal carry powerful words. They state Unsere Gefallenen sind unsere Mahner geworden: Das Leben ist nichts wert, das nicht gelebt wird in treuer Pflichterfüllung für das Vaterland. Only that nation will be respected in the world that honors itself, its history, and its dead.

Consider the journey of this monument. From Bockenheim to the Senckenberganlage, the 13er Husaren-Denkmal has witnessed Frankfurt’s history. It serves as a poignant reminder. The monument honors those who sacrificed everything. It also prompts reflection on duty and remembrance. The 13er Husaren-Denkmal stands not only as a memorial but also as a testament to enduring values.
