“A school with two homes?” you might ask, standing here before the Stadtteilschule Walddörfer. Indeed, the Stadtteilschule Walddörfer calls two locations its own. Established in 1991, this school, formerly known as Gesamtschule Walddörfer, has quite a history. The story begins much earlier than 1991 though. The roots trace back to the Volksschule Volksdorf, founded in 1684 as a humble village school. This school, after several relocations, found a home in 1931 in the north wing of the newly constructed Schumacher-Bau. The Stadtteilschule Walddörfer we see today represents a modern iteration of this long educational lineage. The school serves grades 5 through 13, offering a range of qualifications. Students can pursue the ESA, MSA, and even the Abitur. The Stadtteilschule Walddörfer embraces its role as a comprehensive school. It fosters a diverse learning environment. Students from varied social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds learn and grow together. The school’s mission emphasizes the importance of individual growth. It strives to identify and nurture each student’s unique abilities, interests, and talents. The main campus of Stadtteilschule Walddörfer is located on Ahrensburger Weg. This location houses grades 7-10 and the upper secondary school. The second campus, a short distance away, caters to grades 5 and 6. Interestingly, this second site, Vörn Barkholt, has its own historical significance. It originally housed the Hauswirtschaftsschule Volksdorf, built between 1956 and 1957. Today, both campuses contribute to the vibrant and dynamic learning environment of the Stadtteilschule Walddörfer. In 2018, a new building with classrooms and a cafeteria was completed on the Ahrensburger Weg campus. This modern addition complements the older structures. These include the “Doppel-H” building, a typical 1970s design. This building has seen its own share of expansion over the years. Even with its growth and evolution, the Stadtteilschule Walddörfer maintains a relatively low percentage of students with a migration background. This stands in contrast to the average for Hamburg’s Stadtteilschulen. As we conclude our visit, the Stadtteilschule Walddörfer stands as a testament to the enduring power of education. It’s a place where history intertwines with the present. It creates a promising future for the next generation of learners.
