Whispers of faith and resilience echo around Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor. This unassuming church holds a story as captivating as any grand cathedral. Right here, in the heart of Bucharest, stands a testament to unwavering devotion. Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor began its life in the autumn of 1726. It was a time of both turmoil and faith in Romania. Tatiana Hagi Dinu, a woman of remarkable spirit, commissioned its construction. She had been held captive by the Ottomans. Upon her release, she dedicated herself to building this church as a symbol of gratitude. Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a beacon of hope for the community. The church was initially a skete, a small monastic community. It eventually became associated with the prestigious Șigănești Monastery. Over time, it accumulated precious relics, fragments of Saints Nicholas and Charalambos. These sacred pieces were carefully placed within the legs of the altar table. Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor weathered many storms. In 1896, well-intentioned renovations erased its original frescoes. The 1940 earthquake threatened its very foundation. But each time, the church was lovingly restored. Patriarch Justinian Marina oversaw a significant restoration project in the mid-20th century, rebuilding the surrounding buildings in the Neo-Brâncovenesc style. This created a harmonious ensemble that belied the church’s modest size. Then, disaster struck. Nicolae Ceaușescu’s grand vision for the Republic’s House demanded space. The surrounding buildings of Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor were deemed expendable. Despite the vehement protests of the parish priest, the demolition proceeded. The church itself, however, was deemed too precious to destroy. An incredible feat of engineering followed. The 745-ton structure was painstakingly moved 245 meters east. Imagine the sight. The entire church, inching its way to a new location over 72 hours. This relocation, however, came at a price. Isolated and surrounded by imposing government structures, Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor lost its context, its connection to the past. One month later, the regime ordered its closure. Yet, even in darkness, faith flickered. Secret repairs were undertaken, preserving the spirit of the church. After the Romanian Revolution, Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor was reborn. The frescoes were painstakingly restored. The church reopened its doors in 1996. Today, as you stand before Biserica “Buna Vestire” – Schitul Maicilor, you are witnessing more than just a building. You are witnessing a survivor. Its journey speaks to the enduring power of faith. It is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity. It stands as a quiet symbol of hope.
