Wow What a transformation this building has undergone. The Iris & B Gerald Cantor Film Center stands before you. It wasn’t always a sophisticated university film center. This spot started life in 1940 as the Art Theatre a stylish Art Moderne building designed by Thomas White Lamb. Initially it showed late-run American and foreign films. Later it transitioned to first-run movies.

In the 1980s it became the Movieland 8th Street Triplex. Imagine the excitement the buzz of multiple films playing simultaneously. The building changed hands several times. B S Moss Enterprises RKO and Rugoff & Becker all owned it at different times. It finally closed in 1995 falling into disrepair.

Then New York University NYU stepped in. They saw the potential. They renovated the space completely. The result is the Iris & B Gerald Cantor Film Center we see today. The name honors the generous donors Iris and B Gerald Cantor. The center is a vital part of NYU now. It hosts classes screenings and special events. It’s more than just a movie theater. It’s a cultural hub a testament to the enduring power of film. It’s a place where stories are shared and history is preserved. The Iris & B Gerald Cantor Film Center a perfect blend of past and present. A place where you can almost feel the echoes of past screenings. A living legacy in the heart of Greenwich Village.
