Major James Hibben’s generosity echoes through time. Hibben United Methodist Church stands here today because of him. In 1809 he donated land to the Methodist Society in Mount Pleasant. His gift laid the foundation for a vibrant community of faith.

This church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of resilience and growth. Around 1830 a church building first emerged. It housed twelve charter members who dedicated their lives to this place.

But the early church faced challenges. During the War Between the States Hibben United Methodist Church became a hospital. Imagine the scene. Wounded soldiers found care within these walls. The building suffered greatly. By 1868 it was beyond repair. The congregation temporarily found refuge at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

Their determination never wavered. In November 1899 construction began on a new Hibben United Methodist Church. By 1903 the new building stood tall ready to serve the growing congregation.

As Mount Pleasant grew so did Hibben’s membership. The church needed more space. In November 1958 they started building a new chapel at the corner of Coleman Boulevard and Vincent Drive. The first service was held there in September 1959.

Growth continued and Hibben United Methodist Church thrived. In 1984 a 6000 square foot sanctuary was completed. The first service was held on December 19. The church continues to evolve with plans for a new Christian Life And Learning Center.

Today Hibben United Methodist Church is still very active. You can find it at 690 Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. The church nurtures a diverse community. It is committed to following God. The congregation makes disciples of Jesus Christ.

Raymond P Litts serves as the pastor. He leads the congregation in their mission. Hibben offers several services. On Sundays you can attend worship at 8:15 am or 10:30 am. Sunday School begins at 9:15 am. The Well service is at 10:45 am.

Hibben United Methodist Church continues to meet the spiritual and social needs of its members. It stands as a beacon of faith in this growing community. The church embodies Major James Hibben’s original vision. It goes about the Master’s business with passion and dedication.
