Gazing upon Parroquia San Benito Abad, one might hear whispers of Madrid’s opulent past. This neo-Byzantine marvel, nestled near Retiro Park on Calle de Alcalá, holds a captivating tale. Parroquia San Benito Abad’s story begins with a love story and a promise. A wealthy Catalan couple, Manuel Caviggioli and Benita Maurici, dreamt of a grand church. This church would not only serve the community but also house their final resting place. Tragically, Manuel passed away in 1901 before seeing his vision realized. His devoted wife, Benita, took up the mantle, ensuring Parroquia San Benito Abad would rise in his honor. The first stone was laid in 1903. Benita herself passed away the following year. The church, completed in 1910, stands as a testament to their enduring love and vision. Architect Fernando Arbós y Tremanti designed Parroquia San Benito Abad in the striking neo-Byzantine style, evocative of Istanbul’s majestic mosques. The church features a distinctive red copper dome, gleaming white marble walls, and a soaring tower. Inside, intricate mosaics adorn the ceilings, depicting biblical scenes and figures. The tombs of Manuel and Benita rest on either side of the altar in a dedicated chapel, a poignant reminder of the couple who brought this architectural gem to life. Parroquia San Benito Abad served not only as a place of worship but also as a center for social good. The attached Foundation Caviggioli Maurici provided free education to young workers. These schools, located on Calle Columela, offered a diverse curriculum. From religion and moral studies to practical skills like accounting and drawing, these classes aimed to uplift the working class. The Spanish Civil War brought a turbulent chapter to Parroquia San Benito Abad. The Augustinian priests were expelled, and the church was repurposed for various functions. It even served as a headquarters for the Communist Party. After the war, the Augustinians returned. They began the arduous task of restoring the church to its former glory. Although some treasures were lost forever, the spirit of Parroquia San Benito Abad endured. Today, Parroquia San Benito Abad continues to serve the community. It’s a place of worship, a historical landmark, and a testament to the enduring power of love, faith, and the pursuit of knowledge.
