“What’s that forest green shimmer in the heart of downtown?” That’s what people ask about City National Plaza. This twin-tower skyscraper complex stands tall on South Flower Street. It is a major landmark in Los Angeles.
City National Plaza has a rich history. The complex was completed in 1972. It was originally named ARCO Plaza. It served as the headquarters for the Atlantic Richfield Company ARCO. The south tower became the Los Angeles headquarters of the Bank of America.
Before City National Plaza, the Richfield Tower stood here. This Art Deco masterpiece was designed by Morgan, Walls & Clements. It was completed in 1929. Sadly, it was demolished in 1969 to make way for the new plaza.
Upon its completion, ARCO Plaza towers reigned supreme. They were the tallest buildings in Los Angeles for a year. Soon after, the Aon Center took the title. City National Plaza held another record. It was the tallest twin towers in the world. This was before the World Trade Center in New York City was completed. Even today, they are the tallest twin buildings in the United States outside of New York City.
In 1986, ARCO and Bank of America sold the buildings. Shuwa Investments Corp. of Tokyo bought them for $650 million. Both companies remained as tenants. Shuwa later sold the property in 2003 for $270 million. Thomas Properties Group and other investors acquired it.
The towers are built with steel frames. Polished panels of forest green granite cover them. Panes of bronze glass add to their distinctive look. In 2016, The Paul Hastings Tower got a makeover. The top two floors were modified with silver trim and light green glass panels.
In 2005, ARCO Plaza was renamed City National Plaza. The south tower became City National Tower. The north tower became Paul Hastings Tower. The low-rise building is called the Jewel Box. It houses the Gensler architectural firm since 2011.
The plaza features a sculpture-fountain named Double Ascension. Herbert Bayer created this monumental piece. It adds an artistic touch to the corporate setting.
City National Plaza also had a shopping center. It opened with 220000 sq ft of retail space. It had over 40 shops and services. Over 10 restaurants were also present. In 2004, the lower shopping level was converted to parking. Today, only a food court remains.
City National Plaza has made its mark in popular culture. It was featured in movies like The Omega Man and Marathon Man. The complex also appeared in the mini-series The Moneychangers. Even in the film San Andreas, the towers faced destruction during an earthquake.
As you stand here, consider the many stories that City National Plaza holds. From its days as ARCO Plaza to its current prominence, it remains a significant part of Los Angeles. Its architecture, art, and history make it a landmark worth remembering.
