Tucked away in Shenzhen’s Longgang District, lies a hidden gem called the Fengtian Shiju. Fengtian Shiju translates to “Fengtian Residence”. It offers a glimpse into the lives of the Hakka people who once thrived in this region. Built in 1799 during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty by Huang Weichen, the sixth-generation ancestor of the Tangshan Huang clan, Fengtian Shiju stands as a testament to their resilience and architectural prowess. This impressive Hakka walled village, also known as Fengtian Shiju, sprawls over an area of 2944 square meters. The layout of Fengtian Shiju follows the traditional three-hall, two-well design. This design reflects the Hakka emphasis on family unity and defense. As you approach Fengtian Shiju, imagine the bustling activity that once filled its courtyards. Picture generations of the Huang clan going about their daily lives, their laughter and conversations echoing within the walls. The main entrance, facing south by southeast, is a grand portal leading into the heart of the village. On either side stand watchtowers, reminders of the need for protection in times of unrest. The outer walls, constructed from rammed earth and fortified with brick, are approximately 64 meters wide and 46 meters deep. They enclose a world of ancestral halls, living quarters, and communal spaces. Within Fengtian Shiju, the three halls are dedicated to ancestral worship. These halls served as gathering places for important ceremonies and celebrations. Two wells, strategically placed within the compound, provided a vital source of water. Notice the moon pond and surrounding wall located at the front of the residence. This peaceful oasis likely offered a space for contemplation and reflection. The architectural style of Fengtian Shiju is typical of Hakka enclosed houses in Shenzhen. It embodies the ingenuity and adaptability of the Hakka people. They created homes that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing, harmonizing with the surrounding environment. Fengtian Shiju stands as a reminder of their rich cultural heritage and their enduring connection to the land.
