Perhaps you’ve noticed the empty space where Chapelle Saint-Paul once stood. It’s a story of architecture, faith, and ultimately, loss. The Chapelle Saint-Paul, or Saint-Joseph Chapel of Saint-Paul College, held a significant place in Lille’s architectural and cultural landscape.

Imagine the year 1887. The Chapelle Saint-Paul is newly completed. Auguste Mourcou designed it. His vision manifested in an eclectic romano-Byzantine style. The Jesuits embraced this chapel. It became a spiritual heart within the Saint-Paul College. The college later became part of Junia, an engineering school within the Catholic University of Lille.

For many years, Chapelle Saint-Paul stood as a testament to faith. It reflected architectural trends of its time. Fast forward to the late 2010s. The chapel’s fate became uncertain. Plans emerged to demolish it. It was for a new campus development. This sparked considerable controversy.

The federation of engineering schools sought the demolition. They wanted to expand the university. This expansion project was worth 120 million euros. It aimed to accommodate 8,000 students. Integrating the chapel proved challenging.

However, many voices rose in protest. Urgences Patrimoine campaigned to save Chapelle Saint-Paul. Étienne Poncelet, a respected figure in historical monument preservation, also joined the cause. They sought to list the chapel as a historical monument.

The Ministry of Culture ultimately rejected this request. Philippe Barbat, Director-General of Heritage, stated the chapel’s architectural merit was insufficient to warrant historical monument status. He noted the owner did not wish to modify their plans. Despite this decision, the investor pledged to restore the Palais Rameau. They also promised to reuse elements of the chapel’s decor.

Étienne Poncelet lamented the decision. He called the chapel unique. He highlighted its suspended cloister. He described it as a repository of knowledge. Poncelet saw it as a testament to the Jesuit presence in Lille.

Despite the efforts to save it, Chapelle Saint-Paul was demolished in February 2021. Its destruction was met with sadness. Journalist Stéphane Bern called it an iniquitous act. Former Minister of Culture Franck Riester also tried to prevent it.

Today, the space where Chapelle Saint-Paul once stood serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions between progress and preservation. While its physical presence is gone, its story continues to resonate within Lille’s cultural memory. The unique architecture of Chapelle Saint-Paul is gone.
