How about we talk about a place where passion meets perseverance. That place is SV St. Johannis 07 e.V. in Nuremberg. Founded in 1906, SV St. Johannis 07 has a rich history. It reflects the spirit of its community.
Initially, it began as Athletenclub Saxon. It joined the Arbeiter-Athletenbund in 1907. A fusion in 1922 with Stemmverein Achilles strengthened its foundation. This led to prominence in wrestling and weightlifting. The construction of their hall between 1928 and 1929 allowed the club to expand its offerings. Boxing and artistic performances were added.
However, the rise of the NSDAP in 1933 brought a dark chapter. SV St. Johannis 07 was forcibly dissolved and its assets seized. Yet, the spirit of the club could not be extinguished.
In 1946, SV St. Johannis 07 was reborn. A new sports center was inaugurated in July 1982. By 2005, the club boasted 500 members. Today SV St. Johannis 07 offers a wide array of activities. These include body workouts, boxing fitness, Sarengue and powerlifting. There is also gymnastics, step aerobics, Zumba, yoga, dance plus parent-child gymnastics.
Ringen is the club’s original and most successful sport. The wrestling team reached the 1st Bundesliga from 1985 to 1988. Pasquale Passarelli, a Johannis wrestler, won gold at the 1984 Olympic Games. He competed in the Greco-Roman style in the bantamweight division. Bernhard Rieger added to the club’s glory in 1990 with a German championship.
The youth program at SV St. Johannis 07 is exceptional. They won the German Youth Team Championship in 1988 and again in 2006.
In 2005, the first wrestling team became champions in the 2nd Bundesliga South. They were promoted to the 1st Bundesliga Southeast. They maintained their position until the end of the 2008 season. After a year, they returned to the top league. Since 2017, the club has been wrestling in the DRB Bundesliga. This is outside the German Wrestling Federation.
Numerous athletes have achieved significant success. In 2005, Christoph Pscherer, Peter Engelhardt, Tim Schleicher, and Philipp Vanek won German championships. Tim Schleicher also earned 3rd place at the European Championships in 2006. In 2007, SV St. Johannis 07 was a German Team Champion in the C/D Youth category. Tim Schleicher secured multiple titles, including a Junior World Championship 3rd place. Tim Stadelmann won the German Championship in 2019.
In 2006, the Dresdner Bank and the German Olympic Sports Federation awarded SV St. Johannis 07. They received the “Green Ribbon” for exemplary talent development. Nuremberg honored the Bundesliga wrestlers “Johannis Grizzly’s” as “Team of the Year” in January 2007. Since 2009, SV St. Johannis 07 has been an Olympic Federal Base for young talents.
SV St. Johannis 07 stands as a testament to the power of community and dedication. Its story is etched in every workout, match, and victory. It’s a place where athletes are made and dreams take flight.
