Stepping up to the Claremont Park Congregation, picture this: 1884. New York City is booming. The New Parks Act is transforming the Bronx, and the grand Zborowski Mansion within Claremont Park becomes the headquarters for the Bronx Parks Department. Claremont Park Congregation, although not yet established, is linked to this history by the park itself. This area, once part of the sprawling Morris family estate, witnessed a shift with the arrival of the railroad and the sale of land. The Zborowskis, a newlywed couple, purchased a parcel and constructed their mansion, naming it Claremont. The very name echoes through time, connecting the park, the mansion, and eventually, the Claremont Park Congregation. The park’s evolution mirrors the city’s growth. From its origins as a private estate, it became a public space, complete with ball courts, playgrounds, and even swimming pools. The infamous “Black Swamp,” once feared by Native Americans and early settlers, was eventually filled. Claremont Park Congregation stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community in a constantly changing landscape. The mansion is gone, replaced by a gazebo in 1938, but the park, and the congregation that bears its name, remain. They serve as a reminder of the rich, layered history of this corner of the Bronx.
