Haven’t you heard of Guanyin? She is the goddess of compassion. Today we explore the Shijietou Guanyin Temple. It is a testament to Shenzhen’s spiritual side. While Shenzhen is known for its modernity the Shijietou Guanyin Temple offers a tranquil contrast.
The Shijietou Guanyin Temple gives us insight into Buddhism here. Though Hongfa Temple is Shenzhen’s premier Buddhist temple, Guanyin Temple also holds a special place. It shows the increasing number of Buddhist sites in the city. These complement the many Daoist and folk temples.
Imagine the completed Shijietou Guanyin Temple. It will have all features of a first-class temple. These include a Mountain Gate and a Four Kings Hall. Also planned are a Buddha Hall, a Sutra Repository, and a Ten-Thousand Buddha Pagoda.
The Shijietou Guanyin Temple’s location is truly spectacular. It is situated on a hillside with two artificial ponds. Two monumental standing statues of Guanyin enhance the site. One stands next to the lower pond.
The main hall features Guanyin and her attendants. It is called Ciyun Ge or Cloud of Compassion Pavilion.
The monks maintain a careful balance here. They are part of the Linji Zen School. They operate booths and move in and out of meditation spaces. The walkways are stone. They guide a seasonal flow of tourists. The tourist numbers rise and fall with the seasons. Green turns to yellow and warm turns to cold. The monks defend the temple and the tree.
Tourism has brought growth to the town. There is no entrance fee. The railed path protects the roots. It also protects the spring below. The Shijietou Guanyin Temple can host up to 30,000 visitors in a day. This requires careful management. The monks ensure the earth remains fertile for the gingko.
Permissions for photos are granted by a master. He is a young monk with wisdom etched on his face. He prevents drones from flying over the temple. Guanyin guides his decisions. Her voice echoes in his actions. “Who could turn away a traveler wanting to see the gingko?” she seems to say.
Let’s appreciate the Shijietou Guanyin Temple. Its beauty and peace offer a contrast to Shenzhen’s urban life. Remember the monks. They work to preserve this spiritual space. They invite all to experience compassion.
