Beneath the Oxford and Cambridge blue colors, a story unfolds. Here we are at the Victoria Institution. It is Kuala Lumpur’s oldest secondary school. The Victoria Institution stands as a memorial. It honors Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. Public donations helped fund its construction.

Now, imagine this. Lady Treacher, wife of Selangor Resident Sir William Hood Treacher, laid the foundation stone. That was on August 14, 1893. The Victoria Institution officially opened on July 28, 1894.

The Victoria Institution is more than just bricks and mortar. It is an all-boys school for Forms 1 to 5. Girls join in Form 6. Locals widely know it as VI. Its students proudly call themselves Victorians.

Academically and in sports, Victoria Institution excels. It is one of Malaysia’s best schools. In 2007, it earned the title of Cluster School of Excellence. Hishamuddin Hussein, then Minister of Education, presented the award.

Picture this moment on September 13, 1945. The school became the stage for a pivotal event. The 29th Imperial Japanese Army formally surrendered here. Lieutenant-General Ouvry Roberts of the 34th Indian Corps accepted.

The Victoria Institution has seen changes. Its original building was at Jalan Tun H.S. Lee. That is near today’s Pasar Seni station. The Klang River often flooded the area. Thus, in 1929, the school moved to Jalan Hang Tuah.

Look at the clock tower. It overlooks the sports pavilions. Notice the large field. Colonial-era trees surround it. The Victoria Institution also boasts a swimming pool and synthetic track. Back then, it was the only school in the region with these facilities.

The Victoria Institution has deep traditions. It houses the oldest cadet corps in Malaysia. This corps received Colours in 1960 for its WWII role. There is also the oldest cadet corps band. And the First Kuala Lumpur Scout Troop, the country’s oldest, calls this place home.

Did you know that the Victoria Institution’s cricket ground hosted international matches? In 1997, Ireland played Gibraltar here during the ICC Trophy. The 1998 Commonwealth Games also featured cricket matches on this ground.

The Victoria Institution Old Boys’ Association, VIOBA, began in 1922. Current students and alumni compete annually for the Daniel Shield. This tradition fosters camaraderie.

Many notable figures attended the Victoria Institution. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. Prabowo Subianto, the 8th President of Indonesia. Ananda Krishnan, one of Malaysia’s richest men. These are just a few names on a long list of distinguished alumni.

Think about the school song. It praises the founders’ foresight and devotion. It celebrates the diverse student body. The song pledges to uphold the school’s values. New Victorians will match Old Victorians.

The Victoria Institution is not just a school. It is a legacy. It is a place where character is built and traditions are honored. It is a source of pride for all Victorians.
