Why did Ghana decide to reach for the stars? The Ghana Space Science and Technology Centre, right here in Accra, stands as a testament to the nation’s ambition. Established in 2012, the Ghana Space Science and Technology Centre (GSSTI) represents Ghana’s first foray into space science, exploration, and technology. It operates under the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. This center, along with the Ghana Space Agency (GhSA), aims to be a hub of excellence. They want to pioneer advancements in space travel, exploration, medicine, research, and astronomy. The GSSTI wants to use space science and technology for the betterment of Ghana. They hope to contribute to fields like astrophysics, remote sensing, and weather forecasting. The center also plays a crucial role in natural resource management, agriculture, and national security. One of the GSSTI’s most exciting projects is the Ghana Radio Astronomy Project. This project repurposed an abandoned Vodafone earth satellite station. The station’s 32-meter dish, located in Kuntunse near Accra, was transformed into a powerful radio astronomy telescope. In 2017, this telescope was officially commissioned as the Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory (GRAO). The opening was a momentous occasion, attended by Ghana’s President and South Africa’s Minister of Science. The GSSTI also collaborates with international partners. They work with the China National Space Administration to engage students and young professionals. They have also conducted outreach programs in schools and organized tours to scientific sites. The GSSTI’s journey isn’t without its challenges. They’ve been seeking billions in funding to develop infrastructure and train personnel. They have sought support from institutions like the China Development Bank and HSBC. They’ve also requested technical advice from NASA and other international space agencies. The GSSTI’s ambition extends to launching its own satellite and developing Earth imaging capabilities. This will help them monitor issues like illegal mining and its environmental impact. The Ghana Space Science and Technology Centre stands as a symbol of Ghana’s aspirations in the vast expanse of space.
