Ever wonder how Nieppe got its unique name? Nieppe’s story starts with its name. Niepkerke in Flemish means the Church of the Elm. Imagine a clearing in a vast forest. This forest stretched from Nieppe to Warneton. It was known as Niepen bosch the forest of elms.

Today we are standing in Nieppe. This French commune lies in the Nord department. It is part of the Hauts-de-France region. Nieppe is culturally rooted in the southern Westhoek. This lies within the Plaine de la Lys.

Nieppe sits near Armentières. The two Lys rivers separate them. Nieppe is part of the Lys plain. This wide valley is a natural region in northern France. It is part of French Flanders. Nieppe also marks the southeastern edge of the Houtland.

Let’s explore Nieppe’s past. The town was in the diocese of Thérouanne. Later it fell under the diocese of Ypres. It was also part of the Bailleul deanery.

In 1084 the priory of Nieppe was founded. This happened after an agreement with Bishop Gérard of Thérouanne. Marguerite of Constantinople gifted the seigneury of Nieppe to the priory in 1245. The monks held this benefit until 1570. Two columns stand near the Saint-Martin church. These date back to that time.

Nieppe was contested between Spain and France. It became French in 1678. This was through the Treaty of Nijmegen.

Philippe de Vicq built the Château de Nieppe. It was in the Flemish Gothic style. The Vicq family already owned much land in Nieppe.

Marie Le Blanc bought the land and seigneury of Nieppe. She purchased it from Joseph-Louis Zannequin.

During the French Revolution Nieppe showed resistance. The town opposed the revolutionaries’ measures. In 1793 Captain Clemendot tried to read revolutionary texts during mass. The crowd heckled him.

Nieppe suffered destruction during 1914-1918. It received the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 for its resilience.

Under German occupation in World War II Nieppe resisted. Mayor Jules Houcke was a key figure. In 1944 German prisoners escaped. They sought revenge. They captured and executed locals near the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours church. The next day British troops liberated Nieppe.

Michel Grasset developed Nieppe during his time as mayor. He bought the Château de Nieppe. He created schools and commercial zones. He also established the Maurice Schumann cultural space. The local history museum opened in 2000.

Nieppe has a rich folklore. Miss Cantine is a giant figure created in 1942. She honors the solidarity of Nieppe residents during World War II. Tiot Dédé is another giant. He represents a schoolboy from 1942.

Line Renaud was born in Nieppe in 1928. She is a famous singer and actress. Nieppe is twinned with Basse-Ham in Lorraine.

Nieppe’s heraldic arms feature a quartered design. The design includes gold bezants on a black field. It also includes a red chevron with three red roses on a silver field. These symbols reflect the town’s history.

Today Nieppe continues to evolve. It balances modern development with its rich heritage. Its story is etched in its buildings. It is also alive in its traditions. Nieppe remains a vibrant community in the heart of French Flanders.
