Tucked away in the serene Valley Center, Broken Rock Ranch whispers tales of resilience and transformation. Broken Rock Ranch has a captivating history. It’s a hidden gem, nestled ten miles east of I-15 on Old Castle Road. Broken Rock Ranch spans 34 acres. It offers a tranquil escape where visitors can wander nature trails, meditate under the open sky, and marvel at the starlit nights. All this at a price that’s easier on the wallet than your average hotel.
Broken Rock Ranch wasn’t always a haven for nature lovers. This ranch started its life as the Happyland Sanatorium. Its original owner, Caroline Bean Hoertig, was a charismatic faith healer who drew attention and visitors. The sanatorium, under her guidance, became a prominent landmark.
After Hoertig’s passing in 1960, the property changed hands and its purpose shifted. It was renamed Camp Caroline and served as a church for 49 years. A new chapter began in 2009 with the arrival of the current owners. They rechristened it Broken Rock Ranch. This name honors the ranch’s remarkable ability to withstand wildfires. The only scar left by the raging flames was a single broken boulder, a testament to the ranch’s enduring spirit.
Today, Broken Rock Ranch welcomes guests with a variety of accommodations and activities. The main bunkhouse can sleep up to 78 overnight guests. There’s a spacious dorm house with restrooms and showers in separate buildings. A lodge with a full commercial kitchen provides a space for meals and gatherings. The lodge also has a classroom, perfect for workshops or presentations. The ranch caters to all types of campers. Picnic grounds are available for day-trippers. Open fields invite those who prefer the traditional tent camping experience.
Broken Rock Ranch offers more than just lodging. There are soccer fields for those looking to reconnect with team sports. A swimming pool, reaching up to eight feet deep, offers a refreshing escape. A charming country church provides a space for weddings and services. An outdoor amphitheater with a bonfire pit sets the stage for evening entertainment. Broken Rock Ranch offers flexible pricing options depending on the needs of the visitors, from half-day visits to overnight retreats and even weddings. The ranch provides meals with a breakfast, lunch, and dinner service. There’s even a “take it with you” bag lunch option for hikers hitting the trails. Broken Rock Ranch is more than just a ranch; it’s a place where history, nature, and community intertwine.
