Can you imagine the back-breaking labor it took to build the Great Wall? Here at Yanqing County’s 96th watchtower, also known as the 7th watchtower of Xiachenjiakou, that labor comes alive. This tower isn’t just a pile of stones. It is a testament to the Ming Dynasty’s immense effort to protect their empire. This section of the wall, including watchtowers like this one, fell into disrepair over time. Cracks appeared, parapets crumbled, and the overall structure weakened. But in 2024, a restoration project breathed new life into the Yanqing County 96th watchtower. This project, focusing on three key towers, aimed to stabilize and reinforce this historic landmark. The 90th watchtower, located in Badaling Town’s Shixia Village, was in particularly bad shape. It had deteriorated so much that barely half of its original structure remained. The restoration work at Yanqing County’s 96th watchtower, along with the 2nd and 66th towers, involved meticulous cleaning and structural reinforcement. Workers carefully replaced damaged bricks and stones, ensuring the stability of the tower while preserving its original character. The remote location of these towers presented logistical challenges. Materials had to be transported using a combination of manpower, machinery, and even mules. The restoration project was part of a larger effort to protect the Great Wall and its associated structures. The project at the 96th watchtower is now complete. Yet, the ongoing work continues to preserve this incredible piece of history.
