How would you like a school where you decide what you learn? Right here at the Demokratische Schule Kapriole in Freiburg, students do just that. The Kapriole isn’t your typical school. Founded in 1997 as the “Freie Grundschule mit Montessoripädagogik,” it began with just 15 students and three teachers. It has since grown to include a Werkrealschule and boasts a student body of 150. Located in the Konrad-Guenther-Park in Freiburg’s Waldsee district, the school sits in temporary buildings, a 17-year “provisorium.” However, a new building is in the works, designed to minimize environmental impact by utilizing the existing footprint. The Demokratische Schule Kapriole is a member of both the European Democratic Education Community and the German Association of Free Alternative Schools. Democracy isn’t just a subject here, it’s the guiding principle. Every week, the entire school community gathers for a Schulversammlung, a school meeting. From rules to curriculum, every decision is put to a vote. Every single person present, student or teacher, has one vote. Imagine a classroom where a student can choose to study math, build a birdhouse, or simply relax and chat. At the Demokratische Schule Kapriole, self-directed learning is key. Students select from a wide array of courses, projects, and workshops. The belief is that learning happens everywhere, all the time, not just in formal settings. Even the traditional grading system is replaced with regular individual discussions between teachers, students, and parents. A comprehensive “Jahresmappe,” or yearly portfolio, filled with pictures and a personal letter from a teacher, documents each student’s progress. Conflict resolution is also student-led. A “Klärungskomitee,” composed of two students and two teachers, addresses disputes and determines consequences for rule violations. Importantly, the accused must agree to the sanctions. If no agreement is reached, the school meeting takes over. This commitment to student voice permeates every aspect of life at the Demokratische Schule Kapriole. This unique approach to education makes the Kapriole a fascinating example of democratic principles in action.
