Imagine whispers from the past. They echo through the ancient trees surrounding Đình Thần Dĩ An. We stand before Đình Thần Dĩ An now a historical and cultural landmark. It stands as a testament to Vietnamese village traditions.

Đình Thần Dĩ An like many Vietnamese communal houses is a place to worship the village tutelary god. This god protects the village and ensures its well-being. Over time Đình Thần Dĩ An earned recognition as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic.

Its story began humbly. The area was once a dense primeval forest with a sparse population. Seeking divine protection villagers built a simple leaf hut. This rudimentary shelter served as a place of worship and hope. They prayed for peace and strength. This humble leaf shelter was the original temple. It was the “ancient temple”.

Around 1838 the community grew. A need arose for a communal space to host cultural activities. People joined forces. They rebuilt the temple. It marked the birth of the name Đình Thần Dĩ An.

In 1852 Emperor Tự Đức bestowed a noble title upon the tutelary deity. The deity became known as “Bảo An Chánh Trực Hựu Thiện Đôn Ngưng”. This title recognized the god’s merit in aiding the nation and rescuing the people. From that moment the temple became officially known as Đình Thần Dĩ An.

The Đình’s architecture reflects traditional Vietnamese style. The entrance gate is built in the style of a triple gate. It features a main entrance and two side entrances. Its roof has a stepped design. The surfaces are adorned with rich floral patterns and Han script couplets. This creates a serene ambiance blending ancient features with the modern surroundings.

Beyond the triple gate lies a spacious courtyard. Ancient trees over a century old dot the landscape. Within the grounds are various structures. These include the Lady Ngũ Hành temple Ngọc Hoàng temple and more. These blend harmoniously under the green foliage adding to the Đình’s tranquility.

The main place of worship is a rectangular building. It comprises the main hall a guest house and a house for monks. According to elders Đình Thần Dĩ An was constructed around the 1880s. It was initially called the ancient temple.

Over the years Đình Thần Dĩ An has undergone numerous renovations. In 1910 villagers rebuilt it at its current location. They added a martial arts yard and other structures. All were made of precious wood with yin-yang tiled roofs.

In 1932 the Đình was expanded. A new worship area replaced the old one. The old area became a guest house. Đình Thần Dĩ An served not only as a cultural hub. During the resistance wars against the French and Americans it became a revolutionary base. It sheltered the Đào Sơn Tây troops. Secret tunnels within the Đình grounds still exist.

Despite war damage the Đình persevered. After liberation the local community contributed to its restoration. In 1998 it was repaired. A connecting Vo Ca house was added. In 2006 and 2007 a new guest house was built. These efforts helped Đình Thần Dĩ An regain its beauty.

Đình Thần Dĩ An bears historical significance. It played a vital role in the formation and development of the Dĩ An region. In early years it sheltered people from the wilderness. During war it served as a training ground for local soldiers. It also preserved local cultural traditions.

Annually Đình Thần Dĩ An maintains traditional festivals. These festivals have been preserved since the land reclamation period.

In today’s market economy Đình Thần Dĩ An remains a cultural anchor. It allows people to express gratitude to their ancestors. In 2011 the People’s Committee recognized it as a historical and cultural site. This recognition is a source of pride for the people of Dĩ An.
