Renfrew Parish Church boasts a history stretching back to 1136. That’s when it was gifted to Glasgow Cathedral. The original church built by Walter Fitz-Alan stood on the Inch of Renfrew. Dedicated to St James it served as a testament to the Fitz-Alan family. Monks resided nearby constructing a chapel to the Virgin Mary. The present church stands where that chapel once stood.

After the monks departed Renfrew church took on a new title. It became the Church of St Mary and St James. Later the name shifted again becoming St Kentigern and St Nicholas. This was probably a local name as it was the name given to the High Altar. The current church building only dates from 1861-62. Imagine the treasures unearthed during its construction. A small bell now in Renfrew Burgh Museum was discovered. This church is more than just a building.

Within Renfrew Parish Church lie remarkable historical artifacts. The 14th-15th century tomb of John Ross and his wife remains. So does the tomb of John Motherwell from the 15th century. These are tangible links to the past. The church also features a dedicated pew used by Queen Victoria. She would worship there during visits to Lord Blythswood.

The architect John Thomas Rochead designed the current church. Dr Peter McGregor Chalmers made alterations to the chancel in 1908. The church endured extensive repairs in 1726 before its demolition and rebuilding. The current building celebrates a rich history and its connections to the past are clear.
