Completed in the Middle Ages Freiburg’s Freiburg Minster stands tall. It’s a breathtaking Gothic cathedral. Its construction began around 1200 in the Romanesque style. The project continued later in Gothic style. This magnificent structure wasn’t always a cathedral. For centuries it was part of the Diocese of Konstanz. In 1827 it became the seat of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. Then it officially became a cathedral.

The Freiburg Minster’s tower is legendary. Jacob Burckhardt a Swiss historian called it the most beautiful spire on earth. Its height is 116 meters. It’s the only completed medieval Gothic church tower in Germany. Amazingly it survived World War II bombing raids. Its lead anchors held the structure together even under severe vibrations. The church staff removed the spire’s windows. This saved them from damage.

Inside the Freiburg Minster you’ll find stunning details. The high altar is a masterpiece by Hans Baldung. Another altar by Hans Holbein the Younger is in a side chapel. The nave windows bear the symbols of the guilds that donated them. Some windows have a deep red color. It’s not from dye but from suspended gold nanoparticles. The Lenten cloth is a marvel. Restored in 2003 it’s over a ton. It requires heavy machinery for its transport during Lent.

The Freiburg Minster has a fascinating legal history. Initially it wasn’t owned by the Catholic Church but by the people of Freiburg. Later it became self-owned. A city-appointed guardian managed it. Today the M\u00fcnsterbauverein association owns and maintains this treasure. They invest millions each year in its upkeep. This ensures the Freiburg Minster’s beauty will endure for centuries to come. A visit to the Freiburg Minster is a journey through time a testament to faith and artistry. It’s a truly unforgettable experience.
