Way back when, this area was known as Bang Chanang. Now, we call it Khlong Bang Chueak Nang. Have you ever wondered about the story behind this canal’s name?

Khlong Bang Chueak Nang flows through the southern part of Taling Chan District. This canal is a main waterway for locals. Khlong Bang Chueak Nang stretches 12 km. It starts from Wat Ko temple. It ends where it meets Khlong Thawi Watthana near Wat Sala Daeng temple.

Let’s dive into the history of Khlong Bang Chueak Nang. This area boasts a history of over 500 years. It is mentioned alongside Bang Ramat in Kamsuan Samut. This ancient literature dates back to the early Ayutthaya period. This makes them some of Bangkok’s oldest communities.

The name Bang Chueak Nang might suggest “place of leather ropes”. However, in Kamsuan Samut, it was called Bang Chanang. The word “chanang” comes from Khmer. It means “pottery”. So, early residents might have been dedicated to pottery.

Originally, Bang Chueak Nang was part of Thon Buri Province. In 1985, administrative changes made it a khwaeng of Khet Taling Chan.

Khlong Bang Chueak Nang is in the southernmost part of Taling Chan. The area is about 861 acres. A large portion is agricultural. Vegetable gardens thrive here.

The subdistrict is bordered by several other subdistricts. These include Bang Phrom, Bang Waek and Khlong Khwang. You will also find Bang Phai and Thawi Watthana nearby.

Residents here engage in agriculture, government service and trade. You might spot mobile supermarkets and food boats. These float along Khlong Bang Chueak Nang.

Khlong Bang Chueak Nang connects to Khlong Mon. It eventually meets the Chao Phraya River. A boat trip here can make you forget you are in Bangkok. The residences along the canal retain an old style.

Khlong Bang Chueak Nang has seen centuries of change. From pottery origins to modern Bangkok life, it connects the past with the present. Take a moment to appreciate its history and enduring charm.
