Marvelous isn’t it? The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. This seven-story wonder stands tall a testament to history.
This magnificent structure wasn’t always this imposing. Originally built around 652 during the Tang Dynasty it was only five stories high. It housed precious Buddhist scriptures and figurines brought back from India by the famed Xuanzang. Imagine the journey. The dedication.
The pagoda’s initial construction wasn’t entirely successful. It collapsed decades later. Empress Wu Zetian a powerful figure ordered its impressive reconstruction. The pagoda grew taller gaining two more stories by 704.
Sadly a massive earthquake in 1556 struck. It severely damaged the pagoda. Three stories were lost. It leans perceptibly westward a silent reminder of that tremor. The interior walls boast engraved Buddha statues crafted by the celebrated 7th-century artist Yan Liben. A treasure within a treasure.
Throughout history the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda has undergone numerous repairs. The Ming Dynasty saw extensive restoration work. Further renovations occurred in 1964. Today it stands at 64 meters tall offering breathtaking panoramic views over Xi’an.
