Tucked away in the heart of Los Angeles, Allen Chapel Full Gospel Baptist Church has a story waiting to be discovered. Allen Chapel Full Gospel Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of community. The church was organized in the summer of 1945, under the leadership of Reverend J.P. King. Initially, the congregation worshipped in the homes of members, like Deacon and Sister Knight and Sister Cole. The early years were challenging, but their faith held strong. Several pastors led the congregation, guiding them through trials and towards a permanent home. Pastor Davis, Pastor Brown, and then Pastor Johnnie Hitchens each played a vital role. Under Pastor Hitchens’ leadership, Allen Chapel acquired land on South San Pedro Street and received a building. The congregation renovated and refurbished the space, a testament to their dedication. Pastor Hitchens’ leadership continued until 1986 when health issues led him to move to Dayton, Ohio. Reverend Jupiter stepped in as interim leader. Pastor R.V. Higgins became the new pastor in April 1986. He continued the renovations, adding new pews and nurturing the church community. Despite health challenges and an amputation, Pastor Higgins remained devoted to his congregation. He exemplified the spirit of Proverbs 3:5-6, trusting in the Lord. He passed away in September 1992. Once again, Reverend Jupiter guided Allen Chapel. Through prayer and fasting, the church welcomed Pastor Reginald C. Payne in 1993. Pastor Payne brought fresh energy and ideas. Under his leadership, the church grew significantly, from around 25 members to over 500. He emphasized the importance of believers being the church themselves, not just a building. Pastor Payne’s vision extended beyond the existing structure. In 2011, Allen Chapel purchased a new 30,000-square-foot property, establishing both a North East and a South East Campus. This expansion reflected the church’s commitment to reaching more people. Allen Chapel Full Gospel Baptist Church has a rich history of faith, perseverance, and growth. It’s a place where generations have worshipped together, where fellowship is cherished, and where the spirit of community thrives.
