Could a small shrine truly embody centuries of medicinal history? Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine stands here in Osaka. It is not just a place of worship. It is a testament to the city’s deep roots in medicine and health.

This Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine is nestled in Doshomachi. This district is known as “Medicine Town”. The shrine is dedicated to the gods of health and medicine. Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto is the god of Japanese medicine. Shinno Entei is the god of Chinese medicine. Locals often call this place Shinno-san.

Imagine stepping back to 1780. Drug dealers and the Shinno clan gathered here. They enshrined the spirit of Sukunahikona no Mikoto. They brought it from Kyoto’s Gojo Tenjin Shrine. This marked the beginning of the Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine.

Have you heard of the papier-mache tiger? It is a popular Osaka souvenir. Here at Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine, it is more than a trinket. It is a talisman against illness.

In 1822, cholera swept through Osaka. The Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine responded. They created “Torazu Satsuki Yuoen”. It was a pill to prevent the disease. They distributed it freely with the papier-mache tiger. People prayed for recovery at the Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine. It is said that many recovered from their illness.

Every year on November 22nd and 23rd, the Shennong Festival takes place. Papier-mache tigers are given out during this festival. It is a vibrant celebration of health and tradition.

Did you know there is a museum here? The Kusuri no Doshomachi Museum is on the grounds. It showcases the history of medicine in Doshomachi. Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine offers a glimpse into the past and present of healthcare.

In the late sixteenth century, Doshomachi became a center for traditional East Asian medicines. During the Edo Period, the Tokugawa government entrusted a merchant guild to conduct the trade. The Ise Religious Association sought help from the deities. They needed to ensure the careful scrutiny of medicine. Sukunahikona-no-miko and Shennong were housed in the Association’s headquarters. This is the origin of Sukunahikona Shrine.

The Association’s headquarters burned down during the Ōshio Heihachirō rebellion of 1837. A new shrine was soon built within the grounds. In 1906, the shrine’s operators chose to remain independent. They wanted to keep the original kami. Formal enshrinement ceremonies were held in 1910. The shrine escaped damage in the US air raids of 1945. In 1980, the main hall and prayer hall were renovated.

As you leave Sukunahikona-jinja Shrine, consider its enduring legacy. It is more than just a religious site. It is a symbol of Osaka’s commitment to health, medicine, and community well-being. The shrine stands as a reminder of the city’s rich medicinal history.
