Considering how vital clothing food and shelter are it is no surprise to find a shrine dedicated to them. Welcome to Santoku-sha. This small shrine embodies a deep appreciation for the essentials of human life.

Santoku-sha is dedicated to the gods of clothing food and shelter. These three elements are vital for human well-being. The shrine is especially known as a guardian of those involved with the fish market. It has earned renown as a place of reverence for those seeking prosperity and safety in these fundamental aspects of existence.

The name Santoku-sha is closely linked to Santokutei. Santokutei is a restaurant that has been in business for over 100 years since the Meiji era. It is located on the hillside of Mount Inari. In the past people carried luggage from Tsukiji and stayed at Santokutei for about a month to visit the Santoku-sha.

Wooden tags of visitors from that time remain on the outer walls of the shop. There is even a wooden tag from Mr Daizen. He was famous for tuna wholesale in Tsukiji.

Every year on November 18 Santoku-sha holds a unique fire festival. On this day the shrine’s doors are opened. The Shinto priest and all attendees pray in front of a rising fire. They seek to extinguish guilt and welcome good fortune. This day connects the shrine to the earth and to the gifts it provides.

As you stand here remember the importance of clothing food and shelter. These are not mere commodities. They are blessings that sustain and enrich our lives. Take a moment to appreciate these essentials. Consider how they connect us to the past. They also link us to the community and the divine.
