Did you know that what’s called Eastchester Bay is technically a sound? It connects to larger bodies of water on both ends. The Eastchester Bay is located between City Island and the mainland Bronx.

Eastchester Bay links to the Hutchinson River and Pelham Bay through a small channel. This channel runs between Pelham Bay Park and City Island to the north. The southern end of Eastchester Bay drains into the East River and Little Neck Bay. The bay opens to the Long Island Sound on its eastern side. The Long Island Sound then connects Eastchester Bay to the Atlantic Ocean.

Because land mostly surrounds Eastchester Bay, it is calmer than the open ocean. Destructive waves are rare in its brackish water. This makes it an ideal location for harbors. Yet, Eastchester Bay has no trade ports. Larger commercial vessels struggle to navigate its shallow waters. The Cuban Ledge, a reef in the bay’s center, poses another challenge. It makes it nearly impossible for large vessels to avoid running aground.

Despite these limitations, Eastchester Bay remains busy. Flat-bottomed barges transport cargo to and from the Hutchinson River and Long Island Sound. Marinas and yacht clubs dot the coasts of City Island and Country Club. Recreational boats are a common sight in Eastchester Bay.

Eastchester Bay’s underwater ecosystem thrives because of its connections. It links to the Hutchinson River, East River, Long Island Sound, and the Atlantic. Its proximity to the Hunter Island Marine Sanctuary adds to its diversity. Fish species here include sea bass, weakfish, scup, and bluefish. You might also find fluke, flounder, and other fish common to these waters.

Striped bass are especially abundant in Eastchester Bay. They can grow to impressive sizes. This makes them a favorite for anglers. However, catching fish can be difficult. The shallow waters and frequent boat traffic spook the fish easily.

You can fish in Eastchester Bay in several ways. Trolling is said to be the best method for catching stripers. You can slowly navigate the bay. Use different baits like plugs, spoons, jigs, or live worms. Fishing charters are available on the City Island side of the bay for those who want to troll. Surf casting is another option. You’ll need a boat from City Island to reach the inlets. Marshes, flats, rocky shores, and estuaries north of the bay are good spots. A spinning rod with live or artificial bait is all you need.

If you plan to fish in Eastchester Bay, be aware of the city regulations. The authorities strictly enforce size and possession limitations. A license is not required for saltwater fishing. However, you must register with the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Fishing in Eastchester Bay is popular from April to mid-December. Stripers and other gamefish are abundant during this time. Bluefish, haddock, hickory shad, and weakfish are open for catching year-round.

Eastchester Bay got its name from the town of Eastchester in Westchester County. This town has colonial roots. The bay’s scenic waterfront location influenced its naming. The neighborhood offers a blend of suburban charm and urban convenience. Its proximity to Pelham Bay Park and waterfront views make it appealing. Eastchester Bay remains an integral part of The Bronx.
