Deep within the heart of Brisbane, a silent sentinel stands guard over centuries of Aboriginal heritage: the Bora Ring. This unassuming circle of earth whispers tales of ancient ceremonies, of boys becoming men, and of the deep connection between the Turrbul people and their land. The Bora Ring, as we call it today, bore witness to the Kippa-Ring ceremonies, initiating young men into adulthood. This particular Bora Ring held a special significance, a crossroads for different clans – Turrbul, Wakka Wakka, and even Kabi Kabi – who would gather here on their pilgrimage to the Bunya Mountains for the grand festivals. Imagine the scene: hundreds of people from various tribes converging on this very spot, their laughter and chatter echoing through the trees as they prepared for the long journey ahead. The Bora Ring wasn’t merely a ceremonial ground. It was a vital meeting place, a hub for community gatherings, and a space for resolving disputes. Tom Petrie, a Queensland pioneer who lived amongst the Aboriginal people, left behind vivid descriptions of these gatherings, including the Kippa-Ring ceremony. He spoke of two circles connected by a pathway, much like the dark emu shape seen in the Milky Way. Sadly, the physical Bora Ring near Klinger Road West has been lost to time and development. Ploughed over in the mid-20th century, the ring now lies hidden beneath fields and houses. Though its physical form is gone, its significance persists in the name Kippa-Ring, a lasting testament to the rich history and enduring spirit of the Turrbul people.
