Eight feet tall and weighing 800 pounds. That’s the Giant Peach of Atlanta’s New Year’s Eve celebration. It’s not just any peach. It’s a symbol. A symbol of Georgia’s identity as the Peach State.
For years this fiberglass and foam fruit has descended from a 138-foot tower. It rings in the new year in Underground Atlanta. Thousands gather to witness this spectacle. A tradition started in 1989. It’s loosely based on the Times Square ball drop. But this is Atlanta. This is the Peach Drop.
The Peach Drop isn’t just a simple countdown. It’s a vibrant event. A party that fills Underground Atlanta with excitement. For many years it drew over 50000 people. People from all over the Southeast come to celebrate. Itβs a free event. Open to all.
But the Peach Drop hasn’t always been smooth sailing. In 2020 it was canceled. The sale of Underground Atlanta caused logistical issues. COVID-19 further complicated things. The event was cancelled again in 2021 and 2022. Even in 2024 the event faced cancellation. There was a focus on commemorating hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.
However hope was not lost. In 2024 the city approved a deal with Live Nation Entertainment. This partnership brought the Peach Drop back for 2025. The return features musical acts. The event was headlined by Atlanta’s own Big Boi and Neon Trees. The Peach Drop is back and bigger than ever. It’s a testament to Atlanta’s spirit. Its resilience in the face of adversity. The Giant Peach stands tall a symbol of hope for a bright new year.
