From a humble garage to a majestic temple a remarkable journey unfolds. Welcome to Temple Hillel. This isn’t just a synagogue it’s a living testament to faith community and the unwavering vision of one man.

In 1954 Herbert M Shumer a visionary leader saw a need. A new community was blossoming in North Woodmere. It needed a place of worship. His dream began in an unused garage. It was a far cry from the impressive building we see today. Yet it served as a sacred space for the High Holy Days.

The initial services drew over 250 people. Word spread rapidly. Neighbors joined forces. They cleaned the garage installed lighting and created a makeshift sanctuary. The response was overwhelming. This simple garage became the heart of a thriving community.

Temple Hillel’s growth was phenomenal. The congregation quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. They acquired land on Rosedale Road. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place in 1956. A new building rose to meet the needs of its growing membership. The temple hosted over 700 people during High Holy Days. A testament to the community’s collective spirit.

Temple Hillel’s history is marked by several milestones. One particularly remarkable event occurred in 1984. President Ronald Reagan visited the temple. This visit was historically significant. It was the first presidential visit to a synagogue since George Washington’s visit to a Rhode Island temple. The temple has always been an integral part of the community. It’s a place of spiritual growth education and social gatherings.

Rabbi Morris Friedman led Temple Hillel for 33 years. He left an indelible mark. The temple flourished under his spiritual guidance. He served as a friend spiritual guide and mentor. This was a true golden age for Temple Hillel. His legacy continues to inspire the congregation.

The temple continues to thrive under Rabbi Steven Graber. It is a symbol of enduring faith. It’s a place where generations of families have found spiritual solace and community.
