Picture this: a vast expanse of sand, sun-baked and shimmering under the relentless Moroccan sun. You stand before El Badi Palace, its grandeur now a whisper of what it once was. Time has eaten away at the palace’s splendor, leaving behind a majestic skeleton of towering walls and crumbling foundations.

El Badi Palace was built by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur in the late 16th century. It was a monument to his power, a celebration of his victory over the Portuguese at the Battle of the Three Kings. The sultan spared no expense, importing materials from across the globe: marble from Italy, gold leaf from Sudan, and onyx from India. The palace was a showcase of his wealth and ambition.

They called the palace “The Incomparable”. The phrase reflected the sultan’s desire to create a building unlike any other, a place where his subjects could witness the true majesty of his reign. The palace boasted over 360 rooms, each decorated with exquisite craftsmanship and luxurious materials. The heart of the palace was a grand courtyard, its central pool reflecting the sun like a shimmering jewel.

The sultan frequently hosted lavish receptions for foreign dignitaries, showcasing his wealth and power. The palace throbbed with the sounds of music and laughter, a symphony of celebration that reverberated through the halls. Sadly, El Badi Palace’s glory was short-lived. The sultan’s ambitions were outstripped by his own son, who, upon taking the throne, saw the palace as a symbol of his father’s power and a threat to his own.

He ordered its demolition, stripping the palace of its treasures to build his own palace in Meknes. The palace was stripped of its jewels, its marble, its gold, its beauty plundered and scattered. Today, only ruins remain, a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of power and the impermanence of earthly glory.

As we walk through the palace, the silence speaks volumes. The wind whistles through the walls, a lonely melody echoing the grandeur of the past. Although the palace is now a shell of its former self, its ruins still hold a powerful fascination. It is a testament to the sultan’s dream, a reminder of the impermanence of all things.
