Has anyone ever wondered what secrets lie behind those stately walls? We stand before the Ex Casa de Gobierno in Ushuaia. This building whispers tales of a time long past. The Ex Casa de Gobierno is more than just a museum. It’s a time capsule, preserving the spirit of Ushuaia’s pioneers.

The Ex Casa de Gobierno, located on Maipú Avenue, is one of the oldest structures in Ushuaia. Its initial construction dates back to the late 19th century, between 1886 and 1890. By 1894, it served as the residence of Governor Pedro Godoy. Originally a single-story building, it underwent several expansions over the years. One significant addition was a second floor, marking the growth and evolution of the government’s needs.

The Ex Casa de Gobierno has worn many hats throughout its history. It served as the headquarters for the Territorial Legislature. This later transitioned to the Provincial Legislature in 1992. Its historical significance was officially recognized in 1983. It was declared a Historic House by the Territorial Government, paving the way for restoration efforts. Later that year, it received the prestigious title of National Historic Monument. Since 2004, under the management of the Tierra del Fuego government, it has hosted cultural exhibitions. In 2008, it became an extension of the Museo del Fin del Mundo, further solidifying its role as a cultural hub.

Within the Ex Casa de Gobierno’s walls, you’ll find a fascinating array of exhibits. One area displays furniture from the Legislature’s presidency. You can also see the original meeting and session hall. A larger room houses a poignant display of photos and objects. These relate to the tragic shipwreck of the Monte Cervantes in 1930. This passenger ship, carrying over 1,400 passengers, met its unfortunate end near Ushuaia. The exhibit also acknowledges the Monte Sarmiento, the ship that rescued the survivors. Another room has been meticulously transformed into a general goods store. It offers a glimpse into daily life in the early 20th century. You’ll find household items, a weaving machine, and an old cash register. These artifacts transport visitors back in time, painting a vivid picture of a bygone era.

The Ex Casa de Gobierno stands as a testament to Ushuaia’s rich history. From a governor’s residence to a legislative center and now a museum. It has witnessed the evolution of this city. Its story is woven into the fabric of Ushuaia. It continues to captivate and educate visitors. As you leave, carry a piece of Ushuaia’s past with you.
