The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to the Oxford Buddha Vihara.
This peaceful haven on Abingdon Road was founded in 2003. Venerable Dr Khammai Dhammasami a Shan Buddhist from Myanmar established it. He earned a doctorate in philosophy at Oxford University. He then chose to serve the Buddhist community in his adopted city. The Oxford Buddha Vihara isn’t just a temple. It’s a vibrant center for Buddhists from diverse backgrounds. Burmese Thai Lao and Sri Lankan communities find a home here. Europeans also participate in its activities. The Vihara embraces a non-sectarian approach. Theravada Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions are all welcome. This reflects Dr Dhammasami’s vision of a universal Dhamma. He encouraged openness and inclusivity. Now based in his home center in Myanmar Dr Dhammasami’s legacy continues at the Oxford Buddha Vihara.
The current abbot Ven Mahasena keeps the spirit of openness alive. He has practiced in Sri Lanka and understands various chanting styles. Sinhalese Buddhists frequently visit. They appreciate the Vihara’s paritta chanting traditions. The Oxford Buddha Vihara fosters community. It preserves Asian culture and language. The shrine’s design respects all Buddhist traditions. The Vihara isn’t just for its Asian community. It actively involves itself in the wider Oxford community. It welcomes schools for visits and shares Buddhist teachings with them. This strengthens ties between different faiths.
Annual events like Songkran Vesak and the Kathina robe offering ceremony are observed. The Vihara holds evening chanting sessions and regular Sunday services. These include chanting sutra readings Dhamma talks and Dana offerings. Meditation instruction is also a key part of the Vihara’s activities. Metta bhavana and satipaṭṭhāna are popular methods taught there. If a visiting monk from another tradition like Zen or Tibetan Gelug teaches the public is welcome to join.
Beyond Oxford the Oxford Buddha Vihara has a growing influence. A larger meditation center exists in the Forest of Dean. This 10-acre space hosts retreats promoting mindfulness. The Oxford Buddha Vihara’s impact also extends to Serbia Hungary Singapore and Malaysia where it has established other centers. The Vihara’s success stems from Dr Dhammasami’s dedication to spreading the Buddha Dhamma without sectarian limitations. The Oxford Buddha Vihara truly embodies the open and inviting nature of the Dhamma itself.
