The story begins in the 1930s with Joseph Lee Jr a wealthy Bostonian and recreation advocate. He saw that sailing was enjoyed mostly by the wealthy. He wanted to change that. He started the Community Boat Club. This group built simple plywood sailboats. They sailed on the Charlesbank with seven boats. They even engaged in protests to advocate for a city-funded boathouse. They sailed under the Longfellow Bridge. They marched to the State House with a boat inside the Hall of Flags. Their persistence paid off. Community Boating Inc was officially incorporated in 1946 earning 501(c)3 status by 1951.

Today Community Boating Inc offers a wide variety of boats. These include kayaks paddleboards and sailboats. They have a strong volunteer base. They run programs for all ages and abilities.
