Was Theodoros Pangalos thinking of military glory? Maybe he was thinking of legacy when he decided to build this monument. Army General Theodoros Pangalos initiated the monument’s construction. He placed an ad requesting designs for a tomb. This tomb would honor the Unknown Soldier. It would stand in front of the Old Royal Palace. Architect Emmanuel Lazaridis’ study was approved in 1926.

Lazaridis and Pangalos wanted the Army Ministry housed in the Old Palace. However, Eleftherios Venizelos intervened in 1929. Setting aside disagreements with Pangalos, Venizelos chose Syntagma Square. He felt the monument should be in the city center, like Paris’s Arc de Triomphe.

Initially, Lazaridis collaborated with sculptor Thomas Thomopoulos. Thomopoulos envisioned a Gigantomachy scene. An angel representing Greece would lovingly receive a dead soldier. Lack of funds prevented this sculpture from being built.

In 1930, Fokion Rok became the sculptor by unanimous decision. The committee approved Rok’s design of a gunner lying on the ground. Its calmness and simplicity were deemed appropriate.

Construction involved large-scale excavation. The terrain was leveled to prepare the site. On March 25, 1932, Prime Minister Andreas Michalakopoulos unveiled the Tomb. Foreign delegations attended, followed by a parade. A torch from Agia Lavra Monastery lit the eternal flame.

The Μνημείο Πεσόντων War memorial combines French urban and classical elements. It also features Art Deco and Ancient Greek symbolism. Its design integrates with Syntagma Square and the neoclassical Palace.

The Tomb features a large Π-shaped limestone wall. A sculpture is at the wall’s center. Side staircases flank a rectangular raised grave. The stairs are decorative, used for observation during ceremonies.

The sculpture depicts a naked, dead warrior. He holds a circular shield and wears a Greek helmet. The body’s pose suggests he might awaken.

Inscriptions from Thucydides’ writings flank the sculpture. To the left, it reads, “There’s one empty bier made up for the unidentified fallen ones”. To the right, it says, “The whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men”. Above the sculpture, it reads “To an unknown soldier”.

Battle names are inscribed on the limestone walls. These battles saw many Greek deaths. Names from the Balkan Wars and World War I are on the left. These include Elassona, Thessaloniki and Monastiri. Battles from the Russian Civil War and Greco-Turkish War are on the right. These include Cherson, Smyrna and Afyonkarahisar. World War II and later battles appear near the soldier.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded by the Evzones. These soldiers are of the Presidential Guard. Their changing of the guard ceremony is a popular sight. It draws crowds to Syntagma Square. The Evzones’ precise movements honor the fallen.

This monument is more than stone. It is a testament to courage and sacrifice. The Μνημείο Πεσόντων War memorial ensures that the Unknown Soldier is never forgotten. It reminds us of the price of freedom.
