You’ve probably noticed the grand old church, its stained glass windows casting kaleidoscopic hues across the front lawn. That’s Saint Theresa Catholic Church, an anchor in this Houston community since 1947. This church was built in a time when Houston was a bustling city in the midst of a massive growth boom. People were coming from all over the country to find work and build their lives. The church was built to serve a community that was growing rapidly. It represents a period of stability and faith in the midst of great change. The people wanted a place of worship, a place of peace that would become a central part of this growing neighborhood. It was built by the people and for the people. The cornerstone was blessed by Bishop Byrne of the Galveston-Houston Catholic Diocese on August 10, 1947. The parish itself was founded by Father Ralph Diefenbach. Back then, the front doors would often be open on a warm Houston day with the soothing sound of a hymn emanating from within. The church was built by faith and hard work and has become an institution that continues to guide the community today.
