“Did the spirits of fallen soldiers truly find solace here?” whispered a woman, clutching her incense. Chùa Đông Quang. Even its name, “Eastern Radiance Temple,” hints at a story. Here, in the heart of Hanoi’s Quang Trung ward, stands Chùa Đông Quang, a temple woven into the very fabric of Vietnam’s history. The temple grounds are not merely a place of worship. They are a testament to resilience, a memorial to the fallen, and a beacon of hope. A stele, erected in 1856, details Chùa Đông Quang’s rich history. It reveals that the land where the temple stands was once a fierce battleground during the Tây Sơn uprising against the invading Qing dynasty in 1789. Imagine the clash of swords, the cries of warriors. Years later, between 1840 and 1847, King Thiệu Trị, residing in Hanoi’s Đồng Văn Hòa, ordered the collection of the remains of the fallen Qing soldiers. These remains were then interred in twelve burial mounds. A shrine was built nearby to appease their restless spirits. This shrine, a sanctuary of peace amid the echoes of war, marked the beginning of what would eventually become Chùa Đông Quang. Over time, the shrine expanded. In 1851, during the reign of Tự Đức, Kinh lược Nguyễn Văn Giai, upon inspecting the area, discovered numerous scattered bones. He ordered them gathered, added to the existing mounds, and called upon philanthropists to contribute to the construction of additional rooms for the departed souls. This act of compassion laid the foundation for today’s Chùa Đông Quang, a temple revered by the two villages of Nam Đồng and Thành Quang. The temple has undergone significant renovations throughout its history, notably in 1886 under King Đồng Khánh, in 1915 during the reign of Duy Tân, and again in 1956 and 1999. Chùa Đông Quang’s architecture is divided into two sections: the temple itself and the shrine dedicated to those who perished on the battlefield. The temple’s main building faces southeast and comprises the Tam Quan gate, Tiền Đường (front hall), and Thượng Điện (main hall). Within the temple grounds are also the nhà Tổ (ancestral hall), nhà Mẫu (Mother Goddess hall), a library, an octagonal tower, and other auxiliary structures. Today, Chùa Đông Quang remains a sanctuary. The annual festival held on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year commemorates the victory at Đồng Đa. It is a time for remembrance, prayers, and the release of captive animals, a poignant demonstration of the Vietnamese people’s spirit of compassion.
