Built in 1874 the Leibnizschule started as a Realschule 1 Ordnung. It was a significant institution. It stood on the Steintorfeld a relatively undeveloped area. The school was right next to the Royal prison. Imagine the contrast. A place of learning adjacent to confinement.

In 1878 the school received its current name Leibnizschule. It became a Reformgymnasium. It offered a classical track with French Latin and Greek. There was also a Realgymnasium track replacing Greek with English. Even then the Leibnizschule was forward-thinking.

By 1906 external girls could take the Abitur. Co-education wouldn’t come until much later. The school’s 50th anniversary saw a gift. Former students gave a country home on Burgberg in Gehrden. The school later sold it in 1964.

The Leibnizschule’s history is intertwined with dark periods. During the Nazi era its director Fritz Heiligenstaedt played a role in the book burnings. The school was a collection point for books destined for destruction. The Leibnizschule became a boys-only school. Students were conscripted as flak helpers during World War II. The building was largely destroyed in air raids. Remarkably in 1947 food coupons could be exchanged there despite the destruction.

After the war the school was temporarily merged with the Herschelschule. Classes resumed in the Sophienschule building. In 1947 the Leibnizschule regained its name. A school-owned country home in Nienstedt was used until 2020. It closed due to unaffordable fire safety upgrades. A new building designed by Karl Otto and Wilfried Ziegemeier was completed in 1954 on Röntgenstraße.

The school’s history is rich in personalities. Notable alumni include renowned figures. These range from Altertumsforscher Hans Ehelolf to the musician Francis Buchholz. It even counts Bettina Wulff the former first lady among its graduates.

The 1960s and 70s saw Wolfram Hänel a former student write Klassentreffen a novel about his experiences. The Leibnizschule transitioned to co-education in 1980. A new building was completed in 2012. The new facilities met passive house standards. It is now considered Hannover’s most popular Gymnasium. It’s a legacy built on resilience innovation and a commitment to education. The Leibnizschule continues its tradition of excellence. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of learning.
